What is Permanent Eyeliner?

Permanent eyeliner, also known as cosmetic tattoo eyeliner, is a tattooing technique that applies pigment along the lash line. This service can create subtle, natural looks or bold, dramatic styles. Permanent eyeliner eliminates the daily task of applying traditional makeup and is ideal for those seeking an effortless, smudge-free look that withstands water, sweat, and humidity. The benefits of tattoo eyeliner go beyond aesthetics, offering functional advantages like enhancing eye shape, intensifying eye color, and adding balance to your features.

Permanent eyeliner frames the eyes and can make eyelashes appear thicker, darker, and fuller. It can eliminate the need to apply eyeliner with makeup and enhance the eyes on no-makeup days. It can enhance the shape or balance of the symmetry of your eyes, create the illusion of larger eyes, or affect how the spacing of the eyes is perceived. Permanent eyeliner can also enhance or intensify eye color and make eyes appear brighter.

For those who prefer a more natural look, eyeliner is applied along the base of the lashes making it appear as though you have full and thick lashes. This is known as “lash enhancement liner.”

For those who desire a more dramatic look, “stardust eyeliner” will be a thicker, smokier look with or without a wing.

At Elysium, our talented artists work with each client to achieve a customized look, ensuring your eyeliner style is tailored to your eye shape and personal aesthetic.

Types of Permanent Eyeliner Styles We Offer

Choosing the right eyeliner style is essential to achieving your desired look. At Elysium Cosmetic Tattoo, we offer a variety of eyeliner tattoo styles:

  • Lash Enhancement Tattoo Eyeliner: For a subtle effect, pigment is applied directly along the lash line, giving the appearance of naturally fuller lashes without a defined line. Ideal for those seeking a natural, “no-makeup” look.

  • Classic Tattoo Eyeliner: This style creates a traditional eyeliner effect, perfect for clients who desire a defined yet timeless look along the lash line.

  • Winged Tattoo Eyeliner: This popular style incorporates a slight or bold wing, giving the eyes a lifted, open look.

  • Dusty Shadow Tattoo Eyeliner: This softer, blurred effect adds a subtle shadow along the lash line, creating depth without harsh lines.

  • Shaded Tattoo Eyeliner: Also known as “stardust,” “foxy liner,” or “velvet eyeliner,” this style provides a soft gradient that resembles a blended eyeshadow effect, enhancing your eye color and shape.

  • Smokey Tattoo Eyeliner: For a sultry look, Smokey Eyeliner offers a thicker, diffused line with a soft edge, creating the appearance of smudged eyeliner.

Each style can be customized to fit your preferences, whether you want a barely-there lash enhancement or a dramatic wing. Our artists consult with each client to determine the style that best fits their eye shape and aesthetic goals.

What to Expect from Your Permanent Eyeliner Appointment

Our process at Elysium Cosmetic Tattoo ensures you feel informed, comfortable, and confident from consultation to aftercare.

Consultation

During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss your desired outcome, preferred style, and ideal color. We’ll assess your eye shape and skin type to determine the most flattering style. Our artists prioritize open communication, so you’re confident in your style selection.

Procedure

The procedure usually takes between 1-2 hours. A topical numbing agent is applied to minimize any discomfort, and our artists work carefully to create precise lines for optimal results. Many clients report feeling a light scratching sensation, but our methods make the process as comfortable as possible.

Pre-Care for Best Results

To ensure optimal pigment absorption and reduce skin sensitivity, follow these pre-care instructions:

  • Remove Lash Extensions: At least one week prior to your appointment.

  • Discontinue Lash Serums: Such as Latisse, for a minimum of four weeks prior.

  • Avoid Lash Treatments: No tinting, perming, or lifting a week before.

  • Remove Contact Lenses: Do not wear contacts to your appointment or within 24 hours afterward.

  • Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine: For at least 24 hours before the procedure.

  • No Blood Thinners: Avoid aspirin, fish oil, Vitamin E, Advil, or ibuprofen at least 48 hours prior.

  • Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning: Refrain from sunbathing or using tanning beds on your face for at least two weeks prior to your appointment.

  • Discontinue Exfoliating Skincare Products: Stop using Retin-A, chemical and laser peels, microdermabrasions, alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), and any chemical exfoliants or brightening skincare for a minimum of four weeks before your procedure.

Following these guidelines helps reduce bleeding and skin sensitivity, which in turn promotes better pigment retention and healing results.

Aftercare and Healing

The aftercare process is critical for successful healing and long-lasting results. Here’s what to keep in mind after your procedure:

  1. Avoid Eye Makeup: For at least five days post-procedure.

  2. Apply Ointment: Use Aquaphor or coconut oil to keep the area moisturized, applied with clean hands twice daily.

  3. Do Not Rub or Pick: Allow the pigment to shed naturally, as picking can lead to pigment loss or uneven healing.

  4. Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect your eyes from direct sunlight and tanning beds for at least two weeks.

  5. Limit Water Exposure: No underwater swimming or steamy showers for the first 5-7 days.

  6. Avoid Certain Skincare Products: Do not use Retin-A, glycolic acids, or alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) near the eyes to prevent premature pigment fading.

  7. Sun Exposure Risks: Direct sunlight during healing can change pigment color and potentially cause hyperpigmentation or scarring.

Optional Aftercare Tips

  1. Avoid Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses during the procedure or for 24 hours afterward.

  2. Use Sunglasses: Eyes may be light-sensitive post-procedure, so have sunglasses available.

  3. Pain Management: Taking Tylenol is recommended for any discomfort.

  4. Dry or Irritated Eyes: Use lubricating refresher drops if eyes feel dry or irritated.

  5. Cold Therapy: You may use a clean ice pack for 10-minute intervals during the first 48 hours to reduce swelling (do not apply ice directly on the treated area).

  6. Avoid Eyelash Extensions: Refrain from wearing eyelash extensions for at least two weeks after the procedure.

  7. Avoid Saunas and Hot Baths: Steer clear of saunas, steam rooms, hot showers, and baths for 5-7 days to prevent pigment loss.

During the healing phase, your eyeliner may appear darker and slightly swollen; this is normal and typically resolves within 72 hours. As the pigment settles, you’ll notice a natural fade of up to 40%, and any final adjustments can be made at your complimentary touch-up appointment 6-12 weeks after your procedure.

Long-term Care for Permanent Eyeliner

Maintaining your eyeliner tattoo requires minimal upkeep:

  • Apply Sunscreen: Protect the area with sunscreen when exposed to the sun.

  • Avoid Strong Exfoliants: Refrain from using products with AHA or glycolic acid near your eyes.

  • Schedule Touch-ups: Plan for a touch-up every 1 to 3 years to keep your eyeliner looking fresh. This can be played by ear!

Knoxville Permanent Eyeliner FAQs

  • We use a numbing agent to reduce discomfort. Most clients find the process tolerable, often describing it as a scratching sensation.

The eyeliner or lash line procedure is more psychologically scary to most clients than anything else. The discomfort is relative as everyone has a different level of sensitivity. A pre-numbing anesthetic is applied to the eyelids for numbing prior to and during the procedure. Every effort is made to ensure you remain comfortable for the duration of the procedure.

Having this service performed during your menstrual cycle may increase discomfort during your procedure.

If you are a frequent smoker or "sun worshiper" the topical anesthetics used during the treatment may not last as long and also can lead to poor retention and poor lasting results.

  • Eyeliner tattoos typically last years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, and exposure to the sun. Touch-ups are recommended every 1 to 3 years for optimal results, depending on style.

  • Touch up appointments are optional. We suggest that if you want to maintain your eyeliner, plan on scheduling a touch up once every one to three years.

  • Our experienced artists will work with you to find the ideal shape, style, and color during your consultation, ensuring you’re completely confident before the procedure. Come prepared with pictures so we can best decide the style for you!

  • Expect some swelling and a slightly darker line that softens during healing. Full results appear after 4-6 weeks, and we offer a touch-up session 6-12 weeks after for any refinements.

  • We recommend avoiding eye makeup for at least five days post-procedure to prevent infection and ensure smooth healing.

  • Bleeding during the procedure; excessive bleeding during the tattooing procedure will reduce the amount of pigment absorption. Alcohol, certain medications/vitamins, as well as any blood-thinners should be avoided a minimum of 24 hours prior to your appointment. See above for a detailed list.

Sun exposure: the sun will soften the look of your tattoo and may also change the color appearance of the pigment. Whenever possible, we encourage our clients to wear sunscreen, sunglasses and/or hats to protect their permanent makeup.

Lifestyle: smokers, "sun worshippers", or anyone with skin that is in a state of distress may have less desirable results.

  • It is normal to experience swelling and tenderness immediately following your procedure; this usually subsides within a few hours. The first week following your treatment, the pigment will appear much darker than how it will appear once it has healed. Around the 1st or 2nd week post procedure, the skin naturally exfoliates and sheds. During weeks 4-6 when the skin completes healing, you will see the pigment become more visible. An enhancement session visit approximately 6-12 weeks after your first initial appointment is necessary in order to achieve that richness of color, achieve symmetry, and density in the shape (thus why it is included in the price.)

  • Expect moderate swelling; the swelling may last up to 72 hours. The color will appear darker the first week and will gradually lighten during the complete healing process. While healing, the eyeliner tattoo may look spotty; applying eyeshadow/liner to conceal the area is okay after day 5. Spottiness is due to healing skin regeneration and is normal. Healed eyeliner will fade up to 50% by touch-up. Multiple sessions may be required to achieve the desired results. We can determine going darker and/or fuller at the 6-12 week perfecting touch-up.
